Brexit may not have any immediate economic impact on Pakistan, says FO

ISLAMABAD: Britain’s exit from the European Union (EU), commonly referred to as Brexit, may not have any immediate economic impact on Pakistan, said the Foreign Office on Monday.

The FO added that it would be necessary that Pakistani exporters improve their competitive advantage to compensate for the recent fall in the value of the Sterling.

“Pak-UK relations are rooted in history and are complemented by strong diaspora linkages,” said Sartaj Aziz, adviser to the prime minister on foreign affairs.

Pakistan has excellent economic and trade relations with the EU and multi-dimensional cooperation in different fields under a medium term strategic framework, this cooperation will continue, assured the FO.

The adviser passed the remarks in a high-level inter-ministerial meeting held in the wake of Britain’s decision to leave the EU. The meeting was attended by high level government officials.

The meeting also discussed ways and means of ensuring that concessions available to Pakistan under GSP-Plus would continue either under the new arrangements worked out between the UK and EU or through bilateral arrangements with the United Kingdom.

Attendants of the meeting also asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to closely monitor legal and commercial implications of the treaties and agreements signed between the UK and EU and the likely timings of the new arrangements that may evolve.

Britain voted to leave the EU, results from Thursday's landmark referendum showed, an outcome that sets the country on an uncertain path and deals the largest setback to European efforts to forge greater unity since World War Two.

Global financial markets plunged as results from a referendum showed a near 52-48 per cent split for leaving a bloc it joined more than 40 years ago.

England crashes out as Iceland stuns in one of greatest ever shocks

NICE: England were dealt a humiliating 2-1 defeat by minnows Iceland on Monday as Roy Hodgson's side crashed out of Euro 2016 in one of the most stunning upsets in the history of the game.

Ragnar Sigurdsson cancelled out Wayne Rooney's fourth-minute opener before Kolbeinn Sigthorsson's tame shot squirmed past England goalkeeper Joe Hart for an 18th-minute winner.

Three days on from Britain's vote to leave the European Union, England followed the country's lead by exiting Europe, their quest for a first title since the 1966 World Cup doomed to continue.

It ranked alongside their 1-0 loss to the part-timers of the United States at the 1950 World Cup and sent Iceland, appearing at their first major tournament, into a glamour quarter-final with hosts France.

England manager Roy Hodgson is now almost certain to lose his job, with Football Association chairman Greg Dyke having said recently that the team would have to “do well” in France for him to be offered a new contract.

Ironically, Hodgson's fate was sealed by his former protege Lars Lagerback -- Iceland's joint coach alongside Heimir Hallgrimsson -- who began his coaching career under the Englishman's tutelage in Sweden in the late 1970s.

As expected, Hodgson made six changes to his starting XI at a muggy Stade de Nice, which included a recall for Raheem Sterling.

The Manchester City forward was criticised for some insipid group-stage displays, but he made an excellent start, racing onto Daniel Sturridge's fine pass and drawing a foul from Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson.

Rooney planted the penalty into the bottom-left corner to crown his 115th England appearance -- which tied David Beckham's record for an outfield player -- with a 53rd international goal.

Attacking changes

Remarkably, his side's lead was to last only 34 seconds.

Hodgson had warned of the dangers of Aron Gunnarsson's long throw-ins prior to the game, but from the Iceland captain's right-wing missile, Kari Arnason headed the ball on and Sigurdsson charged in behind a dosing Kyle Walker to volley home from close range.

It drew a roar from the blue-shirted fans in the Iceland end and after Dele Alli and Harry Kane had fired narrowly over for England, they were screaming with disbelief in the 18th minute.

Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson worked the ball to Sigthorsson and with England's defenders standing off, the Nantes striker rolled a shot goal-wards that Hart could only palm into his bottom-left corner.

Having also allowed a Gareth Bale free-kick to squirm past him in the 2-1 win over Wales, it was the City goalkeeper's second major blunder of the tournament.

Kane threatened to provide an immediate riposte with a stinging volley that was brilliantly palmed over by Halldorsson, but in the main Hodgson's men were reduced to long-range potshots.

Hodgson made two attacking changes -- Jack Wilshere replacing Eric Dier at half-time, Jamie Vardy taking Sterling's place on the hour -- but despite their firepower, there was no craft whatsoever to England's approach play.

Had Ragnar Sigurdsson's overhead bicycle kick not flown straight at Hart early in the second half, meanwhile, England would have had a mountain to climb.

But Sigthorsson's goal was to prove enough, with Alli hooking over and Kane heading straight at Halldorsson before the final whistle brought England's players to their knees and sent the Iceland bench tearing onto the pitch in celebration.

Pakistan's social media is playing a negative role: Ch Nisar

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar on Monday said that the country's social media is playing a "negative role" by spreading rumours, a trend he says is affecting Pakistan's progress in the war on terror.

"I am not against social media but the rumours on this platform are spread through anonymous sources," he said at a press conference held in the capital.

"No one knows if a RAW agent or a terrorist is spreading rumours to bring down the morale of our forces," said Nisar adding that "negative propaganda" spread through the medium brings down the morale of security forces.

While he lauded the role of the mainstream media and thanked journalists for their support, he criticised social media for what he says is "negative propaganda against security agencies".

'Terrorists are hitting soft targets'

He maintained that the overall security situation in the country has improved through the efforts of security agencies and, referring to the killing of famed qawwal Ajmad Sabri and kidnapping of SHC CJ's son Awais Shah, said terrorists are hitting "soft targets" to hurt the nation.

About Karachi's law and order situation, he said, "Terrorists want pit us against each other through incidents like qawwal Amjad Sabri's murder and Awais Shah's kidnapping".

He negated the impression that Karachi's law and order situation has worsened by saying that the crime rate in the city has decreased considerably in the past few years due to the ongoing operation in the city.

The minister also announced that Karachi's population will be documented on the same pattern as Islamabad and "it will be figured out if a certain person living in the city is a local or a foreigner".

He added that 20,000 more men will be recruited in Sindh police.

Psychological warfare

Nisar stated Pakistan is winning its war on terror but the nation will have to unite to win the psychological war against the terrorists, in order to take the battle to take it to logical conclusion.

"The odds are against us but I will say that we are winning the fight on ground. Incidents such as Amjad Sabri’s murder and SHC CJ son's kidnapping are acts of frustration by the elements who want to divide us, disappoint us and pit us against each other, we have to unite to win this psychological war," said Nisar

Nisar reminded the reporters that here was time when our General Headquarters (GHQ), Navy and PAF bases had come under attack, but today Pakistan is among those few countries whose fight against terrorism is being presented as a success story.

Pemra bans Aamir Liaquat's show Inam Ghar for three days

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Monday barred televangelist and talk show host Aamir Liaquat from hosting his Ramazan show 'Inam Ghar' for three days on Geo Entertainment, said a statement released by the regulatory authority.Pemra bans Aamir Liaquat's show Inam Ghar for three days

The regulatory authority had issued a show cause notice after the June 6 episode, which showed a reenactment by the show's host of a girl committing suicide, stated the Pemra statement.

The episode aired also had a guest who used abusive language while on air. Show cause notice was issued in June 14, added the statement.

During the June 25 transmission of the show, a female caller's inappropriate phone call was also reviewed by the regulatory authority.

Pemra said it had received hundreds of complaints from viewers, after which they took action. Representative from Geo Entertainment has sought 15 days to submit a detailed reply regarding the many complaints recieved during the show's transmission.

The council has directed for a reply to be submitted by the third day after Eid holidays. After the submission of the reply, further action will be debated upon.

As an initial step, the Council of Compliants, due to Geo's continued violation of the code of conduct, recommended suspension of the transmission of the show from June 28 to June 30, said the Pemra statement.

The channel has been advised to apologise for airing non-professional content which hurt the sentiments of the viewers, added the regulatory authority's statement. "In case of contempt of the order or no apology, the show will suspended indefinitely," stated Pemra in the statement.

"On the recommendations of the council, the relevant authority under Section 27 has advised Geo to suspend the transmission, and to ensure Amir Liaquat apologises in the beginning of July 1 transmission," added the statement.

Past bans

Earlier in June, Pemra had barred actor Hamza Ali Abbasi and TV show host Shabbir Abu Talib from hosting their Ramazan shows on Aaj TV and News One respectively.

Pemra said that it had received 1,133 complaints through Whatsapp, Twitter and telephone calls regarding the transmissions.

The regulatory authority had also announced a ban on shows dramatising crimes such as rape, murder, robberies and suicide.

Addressing a press conference, Pemra chairman Absar Alam had said that the authority has decided to ban such shows which re-enact crimes such as murders and suicide, and those that raid places in the name of investigative journalism.

The authority had stated it was forming a code of conduct and rules and regulations, which will soon be issued to the channels.

Pemra had also directed TV and Radio channels to "immediately stop" airing advertisements marketing contraceptives and family planning products, according to a notification issued to all media organisations in May.

The ban on contraceptives and family planning products was lifted a day later.

Geo Entertainment channel had received a show cause notice earlier this week for airing inappropriate content including ‘suicide scenes’ during its programme and has ordered the channel to explain its position before the authority on June 21.

Hum TV's child abuse drama 'Udaari' was also served a notice by Pemra, which asked for explanation of a couple of scenes in the May 8 episode of the drama series.

India is not reluctant to engage with Pakistan, says Modi

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday stated that due to his diplomatic efforts, the world has seen that India is not reluctant to engage with Pakistan and the world is unanimously appreciating India’s position and stance on Pakistan.

“Our approach has created difficulties for Pakistan, and they find it hard to respond on the matter in the international community,” said the Indian prime minister in an interview with an Indian news channel.India is not reluctant to engage with Pakistan, says Modi

Modi claimed there are “different types of forces operating in Pakistan”, and asked rhetorically if one has to draw a line or set conditions for dialogue, will it be “with the elected government or other actors?”

"The government (of India) only engages with a democratically elected system and that effort is continuing with India's supreme objective being bringing peace and putting the country's interests first," said Modi.

Modi also said India seeks friendly relations but without compromising on Indian interests.

"That is the reason my country's soldiers have full freedom to answer back in whatever manner they have to and they will keep doing that," said the Indian prime minister.

Modi also took credit for apprising the world about India's take on terrorism with Pakistan in a successful manner.

He added that in the past, the world never accepted India's version related to terrorism and at times even dismissed it by terming it as India's law and order problem but "today the world has to accept what India has been saying about terrorism".India is not reluctant to engage with Pakistan, says Modi

"India has to fight poverty, so does Pakistan. Why don't we come together to fight poverty," said the Indian premier, softening his tone.

When asked about India's deepening relations with the US in context with Pakistan, Modi claimed Indian relations with the US are based on India's own interests and Pakistan context is different and not comparable.

"I would especially like to appeal to my country's media that we should stop looking at everything in India from the prism of Pakistan. It has been our biggest shortcoming and our mistake that we have been tagging ourselves with another country," stated the Indian PM.

'India has multiple problems with China'

When asked about China’s recent diplomatic efforts which stonewalled India’s attempt to ban Masood Azhar in the UN, and opposing the country’s bid to enter the Nuclear Supplier’s Group (NSG), Modi stated that India has multiple problems with China, which are pending, but dialogue with the mighty neighbor is the only way forward.India is not reluctant to engage with Pakistan, says Modi

"There are some basic differences. But the most important thing is that we can speak to China eye-to-eye and put forth India's interests in the most unambiguous manner. Pakistani startup for special children wins big in US competition

A Pakistani startup that develops games for children with special needs has won third prize at a competition held at Stanford University.

WonderTree, which develops interactive, augmented reality-based games for children with special needs using Microsoft Kinect technology won the third prize at the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) Tech-I Startup Competition held at Stanford University.

The WonderTree team includes renowned psychologists and special teachers.

The company has also partnered with several institutions such as the Institute for Personal Psychology, DOW University of Health Sciences, Special Olympics Pakistan and the Karachi Vocational and Training Center, all of which help it develop games with a focus on home-based physical therapy, biofeedback and tracking.

WonderTree games use the concept of augmented reality, making the child interact using movements and gestures.

Their games provide an interactive world to the child, which boost their attention span, motivation, alongside improving and developing specific skills through specific games.

The games require a kinect v2 sensor, a laptop and a TV screen.

Muhammad Waqas, CEO and co-founder of WonderTree, who pitched the startup at the competition, said meeting investors, networking with industry experts and getting one-on-one mentoring at GES 2016 was a phenomenal experience.

“The entire journey has been an invaluable learning opportunity for us. Winning today validates what my co-founders and I have been working on for the past year and a half and proves that our games can revolutionise the learning curriculum for children with special needs around the globe.”

WonderTree competed in the startup category of the annual competition and was one of 15 applicants selected from 1,074 teams from around the world.

The competition was part of this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES 2016), an event that showcases entrepreneurship and innovation globally and features talks and panel discussions by the likes of US President Obama, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, Sergey Brin and Sundar Pichai of Google, Reid Hoffman of LinkedIn, Travis Kalanick of Uber, and many more.

Important leads uncovered in Sabri murder case, claims CM Qaim

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah on Saturday said law enforcers have uncovered important leads in famed qawwal Amjad Sabri's murder case.

Speaking during a Sindh Assembly session, the CM announced a Rs10 million grant for the late qawwal's family and also offered Sabri's widow a government job while claiming that he was hopeful the killers will be arrested soon.

About the recent kidnapping of Sindh High Court chief justice's son Awais Shah, he claimed that a nine member committee had been formed to investigate the crime.

He maintained that those who committed the "heinous crime" want to harass the judiciary.

"We have announced that anyone providing information regarding Amjad Sabri or Owais Shah case will get 10 million rupees from Sindh government," Qaim said.

Famed qawwal Amjad Sabri was shot dead on Wednesday afternoon in a targeted attack on his car by armed motorcyclists in Liaquatabad.

The 40-year-old Sabri, son of qawwali maestro Ghulam Farid Sabri, was heading to a private TV channel to perform in a Ramazan transmission when he was attacked, police had said.

On Tuesday, just 48 hours before Amjad Sabri’s murder, the Sindh High Court chief justice’s son Awais Ali Shah was kidnapped in broad daylight from Clifton.
